The Tsingtao Racing team have gained quite a bit of media attention with the announcement of their new sponsor for 2018. It was announced on social media that the team will be partnered with the Canandian pornographic video sharing website Pornhub.
The team compete in the 600cc British Supersport series that runs as a support race for the British Superbikes, they are the only team to run an MV Agusta and their riders will be Harry Truelove and Joe Francis. Francis first announced the news through social media and from then it went viral.
Francis explained that he didn't know about the partnership until seeing the bike at testing at Donington Park. "I arrived at the garage and saw it on my bike. That was the first time I knew anything about it" he stated. "I was surprised. I didn’t think it was real for a few hours, I thought the team were having a joke. The more I asked if it was real throughout the day the more I believed it."
Sponsors better suited for adult eyes haven’t been used in motorsport for quite some time. The last “adult” sponsor of significance in motoring was in 1976, with the Durex sponsored Surtees car. And that led to most of the F1 season ceasing to be televised in the UK due to the partnership not being appropriate for a “family” audience. Hopefully not the outcome that will come out of Pornhub being featured during the British Superbike season.
Both Tsingtao Racing and Francis shared a picture of the new livery with Pornhub prominently across the side of the bike. Motorsport fans all over social media have been sharing and making comical remarks on the partnership.
Despite racing in a national championship, the news of the new partnership has made it all across the world. American podcast dedicated to motorcycle racing BrotoGP, only really focusses on world stage and American racing. But even they made the exception to advertise their appreciation for the partnership over social media site Instagram.
A representative for Tsingtao Racing told us that the amount of publicity the partnership is getting is a very positive thing. They explained that “attention and media coverage is key to all agreements and we knew people who will be interested by it. It’s great for all the brands we work with and the series”.
But how does a partnership like this come about? Tsingtao Racing’s explained it was like any other. “The Partnership started from the search they had last year for sports partners, mainly in extreme sports. So we contacted them and it’s been progressing from there, very similar to the Tsingtao beer deal a few years ago” the team explained.
